The overall objectives of the BTSF Training course on Sheep and Goat Pox is to provide the European Union (EU) Member States (MS) and neighbouring non-EU countries with an in-depth training on aspects related to Sheep and Goat Pox (SGP) control and eradication to increase the awareness and preparedness of competent authorities for potential outbreaks. The theoretical part of the course will be further supported by real-life examples, practical demonstrations and a field trip to a local farm. Participants will be encouraged to share experiences and best practices, through debates, case studies and group exercises.
The course addresses the following topics:
- Introduction to SPP and GTP
- Update on the EC legislation for SPP and GTP
- Epidemiology and transmission of SPP and GTP virus
- Diagnostic tools, training and support available by the EU reference laborator
- Collection and transport of diagnostic sample materialCollection and transport of diagnostic sample material
- Farm visit
- Risk factors for SPP/GTP and how to enhance the farm biosecurity –Spanish experience
- Decontamination of holdings after stamping-out
- Humane culling of sheep and goats and safe disposal of carcasses and contaminated materials
- Update on vaccines, side effects and vaccination strategies for SPP Nick DE REGGE TC A
- Control of animal movements in real life and associated legal powers
- Preparing a contingency plan for SPP and GTP
- Surveillance and monitoring of SPP and GTP
