The overall objectives of the BTSF STM on Sampling of food for analysis at official control are:

  • Apply correct sampling procedures to ensure representativeness, traceability, and compliance with legal requirements.
  • Understand the regulatory framework governing sampling in official controls, including EU and national legislation on microbiological risks, pesticides, contaminants and pharmacologically active substances. And also in other areas such as sampling for allergen control.
  • Perform sampling for different hazard types, following established protocols.
  • Ensure proper sample handling and transport, minimizing risks of contamination and preserving sample integrity.
  • Recognize laboratory considerations that impact sampling results, including temperature control, timing, and prevention of cross-contamination.
  • Develop practical skills through hands-on exercises and on-site sampling workshops, reinforcing theoretical knowledge with real-world applications.
  • Document sampling activities accurately, maintaining chain of custody and compliance with official reporting requirements.
  • Enhance decision-making in complex or ambiguous sampling scenarios using risk-based approaches.
  • Promoting on-farm biosecurity measures aimed at reducing the risk of disease introduction, including control of animal movements and quarantine of newly introduced animals.
  • Encouraging early reporting to veterinary services
  • Strengthening understanding of the role of farmers during disease control measures implementation, including movement restrictions, cooperation with veterinary authorities, and implementation of control measures.
  • Promoting good record keeping of animal movements and herd management practices to facilitate epidemiological investigations
